BUSINESS OBJECTIVE 
Recon needed a custom manufacturing solution for its new Recon Jet eyewear to establish a strong market position. It sought a partner with deep experience in consumer wearables, nimble manufacturing expertise and the know-how and connections to deliver a scalable solution globally. It found those qualities in Flex.

MOVING WITH AGILITY FROM PROTOTYPE TO MARKET
Recon’s partnership with Flex brought Sketch-to-Scale® capabilities and the agility needed to stretch from prototyping through production to market delivery. Recon worked with Flex to consolidate its supply chain, vertically integrate all plastics manufacturing for the smart glasses and assemble complete product units.

The first thing to note about the Recon Jet is its looks. It's essentially a pair of open bottomed glasses with two large bits on the sides. On the right is the screen, touch pad and buttons, on the left is the battery unit. Those components add a fair amount of weight to the glasses, which come in at 86g. This extra weight is not necessarily a bad thing in many cases though as it stops much movement when wearing them.
To help with this they also have an adjustable nosepiece and arms to help keep things secure. They are also fairly comfortable to wear for a considerable amount of time. In fact the only thing that stopped me wearing them for more than three and a half hours is the battery life. That's a significant limitation, considering that many rides will be longer than this.
As I mentioned, the main components sit on the right hand side. There is a small screen which sits in the bottom right of your vision, and is adjustable to make sure you can see it effectively. The screen itself is easy to see and I even managed to use the intelligent selective looking technology, which turns off the display when you are not looking at it.
The menus on the screen are navigated by a swipe pad also located on the right side of the glasses. It is simple to use and cycle through the apps, which include maps, compass, camera, music player and gallery as native. These are supplemented by a few third party apps such as Maple, Go Pro Remote, Refuel and VIRB.

SUMMARY
At Planet Computers, we are passionate about typing, writing, being productive and creating on the go. 
Since the introduction of touchscreen mobile phones and tablets, we felt that it is very difficult to type on these types of devices. On-screen keyboards often take up more than half the readable screen. We want to get back to typing on a fully tactile keyboard whilst being able to view the entire screen. All this on a device no larger than most modern mobile phones.



We decided to re-invent the palm-sized keyboard mobile device that will benefit many, who we think are missing using the keyboard on the move. From bloggers and creatives that need to constantly write, to professionals who need to read and write e-mail, create and edit documents and spreadsheets.
Gemini is a modern clam-shell based mobile device with a fully integrated palm-sized keyboard. 
To ensure Gemini has the lineage and continuity of the clamshell PDA designs, and to have the best mobile keyboard design on the market, we partnered up with Martin Riddiford and his London-based product design consultancy, Therefore, who were instrumental in the design of the Psion PDAs of the 1990s. In terms of software we partnered up with Private Planet, a leading supplier of applications and personal cloud solutions for mobile operators such as T-Mobile and Etisalat. The Planet Computers team each has over 20 years experience of software and hardware delivery.
The result of our work with Therefore is a beautiful piece of design, befitting the device we want to create. The hardware is based on a leading reference design based on a 10-core state-of-the-art mobile processor.
Gemini features a sleek metal clamshell design that is perfectly balanced for typing when open and beautifully tucks away the palm-sized QWERTY keyboard and screen when closed. It fits into a pocket, roughly the same size as most of today's mobile phones. When open, the innovative clamshell also acts as a support of the device. The ultra-wide 5.99" hi-res screen provides ample space for creating on the go. The fully tactile keyboard is recognised as the world's best yet smallest full-sized keyboard for finger touch typing. 
We plan to have two versions of Gemini: one model with WiFi only; and the other fully equipped with WiFi and 4G mobile communications.

SOFTWARE
Gemini is powered by the latest Android OS, supporting all your favourite applications. A number of key applications will also be optimised for the landscape screen and physical keyboard.
Gemini will also support Linux as a secondary boot option which provides Linux users with the rich set of Open Source applications.
The software also supports voice recognition using the integrated Voice Assist smart button located on the right hand side of Gemini. You can interact with Gemini using voice commands, even when it is closed in your pocket.



WHAT WE NEED & WHAT YOU GET

The Screen:

IS THE WORLD’S FIRST HOLOGRAPHIC SMARTPHONE NOW A REALITY?

It’s bound to happen. With Ostendo creating a chip  that can produce holograms, it’s expected that after some months some company will be able to make use of this chip and compete in producing the world’s first ever holographic smartphone. However, now seems too soon. The concept of smartphones with the ability to project holograms has not materialized yet. The “holographic display” announced by a Chinese company through a press release about a “world-leading holographic display technology” is not yet the type depicted in the Star Wars movies.



Takee 3D Holography

This is a rather late reportage on supposedly a world-first display tech coming a relatively unknown Chinese company. Takee Technology, in a PRNewswire dated June 22 this year, announced a smartphone that claims to offer the world’s first holographic display technology. It’s not the holograph you are probably thinking. No, there are no hologram projections involved. There’s none of the Star Wars or Star Trek vibe going on although their promo video misleadingly shows actual holograms coming out of the smartphone.

The device is called the Takee holographic handset. It looks just like an ordinary smartphone with the flat display. It does not have parts that can project light and create a hologram. Instead, it is equipped with sensors that facilitate the creation of a holographic effect. In other words, the holographic effect only works on one user. The images shown are changed as the person using the device looks at the display from different angles or as the device is tilted. This is definitely not the same kind of holography shown on the Takee holographic handset’s promo video posted on YouTube.



Different from the Fire Phone

Nevertheless, Takee claims that their technology is “fundamentally different from the Amazon Fire Phone.” As Takee’s press release pointed out, the Fire Phone’s display technology is not a naked-eye 3D display technology. It relies on dynamic perspective 3D technology with which images only have a limited 3D effect, the effect only works at narrow angles side-to-side or up-and-down. The Fire Phone is practically 2D display technology, as Takee would like to put it.

With the Takee phone, the images on the display appear like they are popping out so the user can supposedly see the sides and back of an object being shown while changing the orientation or viewing angle of the device. A Rubik’s Cube image taken by the device’s 3D recording camera, for instance, will appear like a real 3D image on the Takee display. Of course, this holographic effect will only work with images captured using a camera with the holographic 3D capability. Ordinary images will look the same when viewed on the Takee screen.



Sensors for “Holographic” Controls or Interaction

Again, as mentioned you can’t expect Takee’s device to work in the same way shown in their promo video. Nevertheless, the device appears to enable a holographic-like way of interaction. This is because it comes with special sensors similar to Sony Xperia Sola’s Floating Touch technology or the air gestures introduced in Samsung Galaxy S4. As such, users don’t have to touch the device’s display itself but simply hover or point their fingers over the interactive elements or icons on the images they can view like holograms.

Takee Phone Specs

Compared to other smartphones from leading manufacturers, there’s nothing mind-blowing with the Takee phone’s technical specs. It uses an octa-core MT6592T process (from Mediatak) which is already quite common among China phones. The display is a 5.5-inch 1080p (full HD, 1920×1080) screen. It has a dual-camera setup similar to that of the HTC One M8’s but both lenses are using the 13 MP Sony Exmor R IMX135 sensor with f/2.0 aperture. The front-facing camera is a 5 MP unit. The device will be equipped with dual-stereo speakers. Storage on the other hand is a regular 32 GB capacity while the battery packs 2,500 mAh of juice, which is rather small for a 5.5-inch device.

The Takee phone’s dual-lens camera is capable of recording images or videos in 3D or with the holographic effect so the resulting images can make use of the device’s interesting display technology. It’s just uncertain what format will be used but there are apps guaranteed to be available to make good use of the device’s distinctive capabilities.

The Takee handset was officially released on July 17 in Beijing. There haven’t been actual demonstrations of the device yet so it’s still unclear whether or not Takee delivers what its press release and ambiguous media coverage are claiming or reporting. It’s a little disappointing that we can’t still see a device that actually uses Ostendo’s hologram projection chip but the Takee device isn’t really that bad. The holographic effect sounds gimmicky and unnecessary but it’s at least something different from the mobile 3D displays  already available in the market. The 3D games and apps Takee Technology mentioned are worth looking forward to.

The KeyMouse™ is a keyboard and a mouse.  It allows users to operate the mouse without moving their hands out of typing position.  No more moving your hand back and forth between the keyboard and mouse.  It's designed for efficiency, comfort, and ergonomics.



NOTE: Most photos shown here are of our first prototype.  We are working on a new prototype for the final product which has larger and easier to access keys, and more universal key layout (shown below).

We've put a lot of effort into making sure the KeyMouse™ is easy to use.  The main QWERTY key area is curved in both directions to allow for easy access to the keys.



The KeyMouse™ is designed to improve efficiency for anyone that uses the computer.  Uses include gaming, programming, CAD drawing, order entry, stock trading, web browsing, document editing, graphics design, and much more.

The KeyMouse™ also allows you to keep your hands and arms at a more natural angle than a standard keyboard.



Number Shift:  Holding down the Number Shift key allows you to quickly enter numbers using some of the keys on the right KeyMouse™.  This eliminates the need to take your hand out of typing position to use the number pad.  Using Num Lock has this same functionality.  This is basically a temporary Num Lock.

Arrow Shift:  Holding down the Arrow Shift key allows you to quickly arrow around using some of the main keys on the right KeyMouse™.  This eliminates the need to take your hands out of typing position to use the arrow keys. 

Arrows with Mouse: A handy feature for document and code editing.  While you hold this key down, mouse motions will move the typing cursor instead of the mouse cursor.  Great for navigating around quickly.

There are also many programmable thumb keys.  These keys are pre-programmed with any useful functions, but can be re-programmed if you'd like.  Pre-programmed functions include:  multimedia keys (next track, previous track, play/pause, volume up, volume down), browser keys (next, back, new tab, close tab, switch tab), ok, cancel, maximize, minimize, close.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
We've been working on the KeyMouse project for several years.  Here are a few pictures that show some of the progress along the way.
The first few sets were created as one unit that was operated with both hands.

Then we decided to split it into two devices - one for each hand.  A design expert drew up many different sketches with different concepts we could use.  

We made several clay models to get the basic shape that fit the hand nicely.  Next a 3D computer model was created.  We used a 3D printer to print many different models to adjust the fit and feel of the devices.
